60 WEST KINZIE, CHICAGO

60 West Kinzie Street Chicago is a multi-level car-park and retail development in the recently revitalized River North neighborhood. In contrast to the long tradition of parking garages as disguised office buildings with false facades, 60 West Kinzie presents an open and suspended glazed screen façade that permits a layered visual recognition of the structure and program within and provides natural ventilation and light to the interior spaces to minimize energy use. Additional sustainable design initiatives include low-speed vertical-axis turbines, a planted roof and cistern rain water collection system, electric car plug-in stations, and elevator lobbies with way-finding messages to educate Chicagoans on how to live more sustainably and better protect the environment.
